Improvised anniversary trip

Late September was our 14th wedding anniversary.
I took a day off, and we were planning to head to Manhattan early for a museum visit a fancy lunch. The night before we changed plans, just like that.

Instead we had an extra long breakfast finishing a TV show, and then we got on the car and drove to Robbinsville, New Jersey, to visit what we thought was a single, large hindu temple.
The trip was uneventful, as expected of a weekday heading away from New York City.

A very ornate column.

Turns out, the site is comprised of a series of buildings. One of them houses a whole temple inside (like, a building inside another building). It might have been my favorite of them, as the temple really felt special. Just my perception. 🤷

There was also a walkway outside, which like everything else in there was intricately decorated.

Corridor columns, decorated with statues.

The centerpiece of the complex is, indeed, a big temple. A huge building, decorated with as much detail as all the others.

Biggest temple in the complex.

The place is not without controversy, as there some discussion on whether the artisans that worked there did it voluntarily or were forced. There's more information, and of course better pictures, in the Wikipedia page.

As for us, we thought the place was imposing. Like I said, I personally found the smaller temple more...spiritual? Or, emotionally touching. Or something.
Last year we visited a rabbi memorial (grave? is that the correct term?) in Queens. For a pair of atheist, we sure seem to enjoy visiting religious places.

We wrapped up the celebrations having a late lunch at a Red Robin. A far cry from the original lunch plan :) but what can I say. I think we both like it better when plans come together last minute and we leave room for improvisation.
