I take way too many pictures thinking I can make stupid comments on the blog about them, but
rarely actually share them. Let's change that today. Also, a good excuse for a post, as I feel
lazy about writing today.
I am sure I will end up writing a lot more than I intended... For starters, two minutes ago
this intro wasn't in the plans, yet here we are.
On September 5 I was still home alone, and I had a double date with myself: Colorado Rapids
and Vélez Sarsfield were playing at 07:40 pm and 8:15 pm, respectively.
So I sat down to watch with pizza and coke zero, which sounded great in theory...
...but the end result was, some excitement, and some annoyance too. The way I like to watch
games (I guess the best word to describe it is: intense) it is impossible to
enjoy two at the same time.
Movement off the ball is as important as with it, and people shifting positions and making
overlapping runs etc. matter a lot. Can't keep up with two screens with that level of detail.
A younger me would scoff, since I finished Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS in hard difficult.
Bullet hell over two screens. Maybe it really is just about being older...
Anyway, Vélez won 1-0. At some point I thought we were not going to make it, the last 20
minutes of the game were a bit iffy for us.
Colorado lost 3-0, it was just a really bad night. We had plenty of time to tie the game, but
instead we completely collapsed near the end. Not that we were about to tie... we
didn't have that many good chances. It's just that the 1-0 held long enough that a tie didn't
seem impossible.
We saw this at Newark airport. It is curious that it is in the short term parking lot.
Is it too pompous to say it is a piece of accidental, or improvised, art? Maybe.
But I bet there are many "interactive museums" that would kill for this kind of
engagement. =P
I was at Shoprite, getting groceries, as cool people do. And I saw that the next aisle had "religious candles". I thought, this cannot be real...
To be clear, I knew of the existence of religious candles, I grew up in a catholic country after all. I simply was surprised to see them at a grocery store, instead of a santería. Maybe a bit extra surprised to see them at a grocery store in USA.
As I was perusing the images on them out of curiosity, one that I hadn't seen before caught my attention. After the fact I found out that it is a pretty common one:

a Mecha Jesus. As if this were a screenshot mid-animation. Stay with me.
Right before the moment depicted in the candle, each of the five figures make a battle cry,
probably in split screen. A chime plays, then the image in the candle pops up, and from there
on each of the fingers appears a pillar of light. Finally the camera pans out and through the
clouds emerges a giant Jesus, and each of the persons lands on a different part of the
body.
Baby Jesus goes in the head, and drives the mecha, as any person of culture that has played
Captain Commando
knows he should.
The meta-commentary of a Baby Jesus, controlling a giant Mecha Jesus, is an exercise left to theologists.
Remember my recent visit to Midtown Comics? I mentioned a creepy subway entrance. Here it is, in all its depressing glory:
That's the view going in. At any point, if the lights started flickering, I would be sure that
something is about to eat my head. In one bite. Probably something undead.
The view from other side isn't any more flattering:
You can see at the far end, next to the stairs that head to the surface, is the now closed
store.
If my theory is right, the place will be closed forever.
