Rituals (and missing them)

Quite a while ago I read this post by Annie: Ritualize anything

Rituals? I can't stop myself. They're so good. Absolutely breathtaking. Humanity's finest work, perhaps. They make no sense. It's all about beauty, about made-up meaning, about art.

I was reminded of it this morning. Usually FRIGGING ALWAYS when I come to the office I prepare myself a mate 🧉❤️ and start catching up on emails and looking at where I left things the day before.
Not today.

When working from home, after lunch I tend to prepare tea, if not black then something with a hint of bitterness (lately it's been a mix of green and blueberries from iN-TEA).
Not yesterday.

Because of the stupid teeth extraction, I cannot have hot drinks for a few days. Allegedly the first three days. I am doing so well in my recovery so far (knocking wood...), that I don't want to risk pain, swelling or any other complication.
I did get a coffee just now, but let it sit on the desk until it was just warm. I like my infusions HOT, thank you very much. That was a sad, sad coffee.

But more than the actual drink, caffeine, or a particular flavor...what I really miss is the ritual. Putting things together in a familiar sequence of steps, signaling the start of the day or the afternoon work. The ritual as a marker, a gate.
I like routines so much that they turn into rituals.
Put water in the kettle, turn it on, pick a tea. Measure (but don't be too precious about it), pour a certain amount of water (again, don't be too precious), ask Siri for a timer for so-and-so minutes.
Fill the mate cup, three quarters from the top. Go get hot water. Shake the mate to distribute powder. Pour water, taste it, decide whether to add more hot or cold water to make it perfect. Then have the mate sit between the halves of the keyboard while I type away.

Two days in a row missing my rituals, and it bothered me so much that not only I remembered Annie's post, but I also needed to vent about it.
